Police investigate fatal shooting at LongHorn Steakhouse on East 82nd Street in Indianapolis after dispute inside crowded restaurant turns violent
Indianapolis, Indiana – A Sunday evening at a popular restaurant in Indianapolis’ Castleton neighborhood ended in tragedy after a shooting left one man dead.
According to CBS4 Indy citing the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were dispatched around 8:49 p.m. to a LongHorn Steakhouse in the 5900 block of East 82nd Street following reports of gunfire. When officers arrived, they encountered a chaotic scene inside the restaurant and located an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders quickly transported the victim to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite efforts to save him, he later died from his injuries. The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 24-year-old Justin Hignite.
Investigators determined the violence likely grew out of a confrontation involving the victim and several other individuals inside the restaurant’s lobby area. During the disturbance, police said at least one person involved pulled out a handgun and fired at Hignite.
As officers worked to secure the area and piece together what had happened, they located three male persons of interest nearby at a Jimmy John’s close to the restaurant. The individuals were detained during the investigation but were later released after consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, according to police.
Authorities described the situation officers encountered upon arrival as extremely disorderly, with many people present at the restaurant at the time the shots were fired. Dispatchers sent multiple units to assist as the investigation unfolded.
The deadly shooting in Castleton was one of two separate incidents involving gunfire reported in Indianapolis within roughly a 10-minute period Sunday night. Police continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident as the investigation remains ongoing.
