17-year-old arrested after armed robbery of rideshare driver leads to police chase in Indianapolis
Indianapolis, Indiana – A teenage suspect is in custody after a rideshare trip in Indianapolis turned into a dangerous situation involving a firearm, stolen money, and a desperate attempt by a driver to get help.
Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) arrested a 17-year-old male on preliminary charges of armed robbery and resisting law enforcement following the incident on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, in the 3800 block of North Sherman Drive.
The situation first caught the attention of an IMPD North District officer who was on patrol and observed an SUV driving in an unusual manner. The vehicle was seen swerving rapidly back and forth, raising immediate concern. Within moments, the SUV jumped a curb and struck the rear driver’s side of the officer’s marked police vehicle.
Driver Signals Distress as Suspect Attempts Escape
The officer quickly noticed that the driver appeared frightened and distressed and was attempting to get his attention by pointing toward the passenger. It became clear that something far more serious was happening inside the vehicle.
Suddenly, the passenger—later identified as the 17-year-old suspect—jumped out of the SUV and ran from the scene, throwing a backpack as he fled. The officer immediately chased the suspect on foot and caught up with him as he attempted to climb over a barbed wire fence. The juvenile was taken into custody without further incident.
Armed Threat and Stolen Money Inside the Vehicle
After the arrest, officers spoke with the rideshare driver, who described a frightening encounter that unfolded during the trip.
According to the driver, the juvenile pulled out a handgun and threatened him, saying, “I will shoot you if you move.” The suspect then took the driver’s phone and began transferring money from multiple apps to himself.
While still armed, the juvenile ordered the driver to continue driving and go to an ATM. Despite the fear, the driver stayed alert and searched for a way to escape the situation safely.
That opportunity came when the driver saw the IMPD officer nearby. In a quick decision, the driver maneuvered the vehicle in a way that drew attention, which ultimately led to the collision with the police car and alerted the officer to the emergency.
Charges Filed and Case Moving Forward
The 17-year-old was arrested on preliminary charges of armed robbery and resisting law enforcement. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision.
Officials noted that although the situation ended without serious injuries, the outcome could have been far worse. The quick response by the officer and the driver’s actions played a key role in bringing the incident to a safe resolution.
