Residents can now check Monroe County road maintenance responsibilities through new online map

Monroe County, Indiana – Residents across Monroe County now have a clearer way to understand which roads fall under county responsibility.

A new interactive map, developed through a collaboration between the GIS Division of the Surveyor’s Office and the Monroe County Highway Department, allows the public to easily search and identify roadways that are officially maintained by the county.

The online map, available at this link, displays every roadway currently listed in the county’s official road inventory. By making this information publicly accessible, county officials hope to help residents quickly determine whether their road receives county services such as routine maintenance or snow removal.

Understanding whether a roadway is included in the county’s inventory plays a crucial role in how it is maintained.

Only roads that have been formally accepted into Monroe County’s road inventory qualify for county maintenance services. That includes tasks residents often depend on during the winter months, such as snow plowing.

For many neighborhoods, especially newer subdivisions, the process of becoming part of the county’s road system involves several steps. Developers are typically required to construct public improvements, such as roadways with curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and street trees, according to an approved subdivision plan.

After those improvements are completed and meet the county’s standards, the developer may request that the County Commissioners formally accept the right-of-way.

Until that acceptance occurs, the roads remain privately maintained. In many cases, developers continue caring for the infrastructure during this interim period, including providing services like snow removal. Sometimes that responsibility is handled instead by a homeowners association until the county officially takes over maintenance.

County officials say the new map can be particularly helpful for people considering buying property in a developing neighborhood. Prospective buyers who want to know whether their future street will eventually be maintained by the county are encouraged to check on the subdivision’s progress before finalizing a purchase.

Residents who want additional information about road acceptance or subdivision development can contact the Monroe County Planning Department at 812-349-2560. Meanwhile, the Monroe County Highway Garage is also available to confirm whether a specific roadway is currently maintained by the county.

The Highway Garage can be reached at 812-803-6810 for questions about roadway maintenance responsibilities.

By placing this information directly into the hands of the public, Monroe County is offering residents a simple way to better understand how local infrastructure is managed—and which roads the county stands ready to maintain.
